Mr. Hanna joined Humana Inc., the sixth largest U.S. health insurer, in 2004 to support the expansion of Humana’s industry-leading consumer engagement strategies into international healthcare markets. Mr. Hanna developed projects on risk adjusted provider reimbursement and population health management in Germany and Spain. In 2006, he changed directions and joined the Research & Development division of Humana’s Innovation Center.
Mr. Hanna currently leads the Miami-Humana Health Services Research Center team at the University of Miami, a public-private collaboration of over 20 individuals including Humana associates and University of Miami physician researchers. His background in health policy and experience in the health insurance industry allows him to bring a unique perspective to informing both research design and the real world application of research insights. His personal research interest predominantly includes issues of health policy and finance such as insurance benefit design schemes, off label drug use, and medication adherence.
Mr. Hanna came to Humana from the Disease Management Association of America (DMAA) in Washington D.C., the industry trade group that began in 1999 as the collective voice for over 130 corporations that manage high risk patients with chronic disease. At the DMAA Mr. Hanna managed company operations and public relations. He also played an integral role in lobbying activities and the organization’s milestone achievement of the passage of the Medicare Chronic Care Improvement Program legislation in 2003. Prior to the DMAA, Mr. Hanna supported membership development at America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the trade group based in Washington D.C. representing all U.S. health insurance companies.
Mr. Hanna received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Spanish from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. He studied Spanish literature and art at the University of Madrid, Spain and University of Granada, Spain. He is also a graduate of the Academy for Healthcare Management in Atlanta, and recently completed a Masters in Health Policy and Administration at the University Of Miami School Of Business.
